It is hard to avoid the tough subject of Sunday morning attendance. As if there was no other way to engage in a relationship with God.
When my son was younger it was a fight to get our family out the door in order to get our check in the box.
The guilt trips I use to put on my husband.
The manipulation and games I use to play in order to get him to participate in something I wanted him to love.
Last year I decided I would NOT allow guilt or obligation to push or pull me on Sunday morning.
When my life began to unravel after Easter I almost went back thinking it would heal what was broken inside of me…but, I NEVER went instead; I began to read His word and pray for help in the midst of all the craziness. I reached out for professional help to begin the healing process. What I realized is I was actually forsaking relationship for attendance; relationship with my husband, son and even God.
Our Sunday’s have begun to evolve into something more relational and restful.
Coffee.
Breakfast.
Conversation.
Gathering around the table without distractions.
Father has begun to breathe new life into our hearts and home.
The guilt has faded.
According to The Lexham Bible Dictionary the Old and New Testaments connect the weekly Sabbath or rest with God’s presence.
And seeing that God is omnipresent then we can encounter Him anywhere, right?
The question is not whether or not to attend or not attend church.
I believe the true question is how do you personally experience the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?
What draws you closer to God?
What helps your relationship with God?
Real freedom is found in exploring your relationship with Him on a personal level. Freeing yourself to let go of all obligation and guilt. Really get quiet with Him and allowing Him to show you where He is leading you and your family.
My hope and prayer in sharing my story is NOT to say my way is the right way or your way is wrong; your relationship is your relationship and mine is my own.
Let us find ways to uplift and encourage one another on the journey…instead of telling others how they should believe, act and worship the One who created us all (uniquely might I add!)
Father God help us to love the body of Christ. Help us to STOP tearing each other apart. Give us strength to let go of our own pride and need for righteousness instead; let us give each other grace and allow You to guide our paths individually. Amen!
