Why is rest so hard for so many people?
We need to intentionally take time to sit back and rest our mind, body and soul.
Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers, and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.― Maya Angelou
Rest has not always been easy for me. I use to think I needed to scrub the whole house before I took time to sit back and rest. How crazy is that thought? I would scrub my house for hours and then melt into my couch exhausted… that is not resting.
My Sunday mornings use to be crazy busy and occasionally with my son’s baseball schedule it still can preclude me from taking time to rest but, most Sunday mornings now are spent curled up with a blanket, a hot cup of coffee and a good book. It is my time to rest and relax. It is my time to sit back and just unwind and not think about anything that is going on around me or the world.
When we rest our minds, bodies and souls we are allowing ourselves to rejuvenate and prepare for the week ahead. When we rest we are showing our kids that being still is alright and not a punishment. When we rest we are showing our spouses that we understand the need for self-care.
For me rest has never been easy. I use to wake and see my to do list real and imaginary pushing me to do do do. I have had to learn to be intentionally with my time. I have had to learn to allow myself to sit back and rest… and not just for my morning quiet time.
Rest may come easy to you but, if it does not might I challenge you to find an hour or two… maybe three to rest. Sit back relax and enjoy a good book or movie. Maybe even just be still and know you are loved.
Rest is good for the soul.
Rest is good for your body.
Rest is good for your family.
Attention, all! See the marvels of God! He plants flowers and trees all over the earth, Bans war from pole to pole, breaks all the weapons across his knee. “Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving look at me, your High God, above politics, above everything.” Psalm 46:8-10 The Message
The more we learn to rest in Him the less chaos and pressure we will feel from the world. Learning to be grounded in His love is essential for dealing with daily life. Rest and renew your mind with time away from the chaos, struggles and uncertainty of this world. I promise you will be a better wife, mom, friend, worker and leader with just a little bit of rest.
